LOUISVILLE, Ky.—May 2, 2017—GE Appliances (GEA), a Haier company, today informed employees and officials from the IUE-CWA Local 83761 of two actions it is proposing at Appliance Park to improve efficiencies in order to better serve customers and help preserve the business’ long-term future.
On-site logistics drive speed, flexibility
GEA is proposing to return to Appliance Park the Supplier Distribution Center (SDC) operated by Derby Supply Chain Solutions (Derby) which manages supplier-owned components. The SDC was formerly located at Appliance Park but was relocated to Shepherdsville, Kentucky following the destruction of Building 6 in the April 2015 fire. The new SDC would be located in the Building 2 production area previously occupied by GeoSpring™ and where Zoneline® currently is housed.
“The transportation time and distance from Derby’s Shepherdsville location to Appliance Park has created a number of logistics challenges and is why we want to regain the supply chain advantages of an on-site supplier distribution center,” said Bill Good, Vice President of Manufacturing at GE Appliances. “After an in-depth evaluation, which included looking at all the buildings in Appliance Park, we concluded the best place to locate a SDC for supplier-owned parts is Building 2. This location would offer the space needed for the SDC and is central to our largest production operations—in Buildings 1 and 3—which would allow real-time parts distribution and eliminate production delays that have occurred due to the current off-site location.”
Proposal to move Zoneline PTAC production to an alternate GEA U.S. site
In order to reestablish a strategic logistics parts distribution advantage, GEA has informed the IUE-CWA Local 83761 and its employees of the business’ intent to do a transfer of work (TOW) of the Zoneline Packaged Terminal Air Conditioners (PTAC) production to another yet-to-be-determined GEA facility in the U.S.
The proposed action is contingent upon the outcome of decision bargaining if requested by union officials from the IUE-CWA Local 83761 who will have an opportunity to offer alternatives to the Zoneline TOW proposal. A final decision would be made after those talks are completed in up to 60 days. If the decision is to proceed, production of the Zoneline PTAC units will be relocated in December 2017.
The approximately 140 production and maintenance employees in Building 2 who would be displaced by this proposed action would be absorbed into other areas at Appliance Park. No hourly layoffs would result from these actions.
