Press Release

ABOUT FIRSTBUILD: FirstBuild was founded in 2014 by GE Appliances, a Haier company, to invent what’s next for the home. Rapidly taking product concepts from mind to market, FirstBuild’s global Co-Creation mission enables anyone to submit appliance product ideas or contribute to the ideas of others and participate in its hands-on, iterative process.

FirstBuild’s full-time makers strive to launch at least 12 new products and/or features each year, with the ultimate goal of launching them at scale—often in partnership with its parent company, GE Appliances. Since product ideas, features and feedback are co-created directly with its socially-engaged community of everyday makers, products are launched with strong consumer demand already built in to deliver better products that consumers crave.

FirstBuild product concepts are introduced to consumers at the earliest stages via YouTube and the FirstBuild CoCreation website. Products are offered for sale through crowdfunding, direct to consumers on the FirstBuild website, or through GE Appliances’ retail partners.

ABOUT THE FIRSTBUILD MICROFACTORYFirstBuild’s on-site manufacturing capabilities are key to helping products come to life. Its cutting-edge, 35,000 square-foot microfactory and makerspace are located in a former warehouse on the University of Louisville’s Belknap Campus, and is open at no charge to the public for rapid prototyping or tinkering on personal projects. The facility is engineered for innovation and collaboration and divided into four sections: an open community space for brainstorming and product demonstration, a makerspace for prototyping and building, a shop to fabricate components, and a microfactory where FirstBuild’s own products are assembled and optimized for small-batch product production, which keeps risk low until sales demand grows.
