Louisville, KY., October 13, 2023- GE Appliances, a Haier company, reaffirms its commitment to Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) by announcing a partnership with the district to supply appliances for school laundry centers across the city. The Louisville-based manufacturer has currently donated more than 100 appliances to schools across the district and will now offer laundry units to all 172 schools in the state’s largest public education system.
“GE Appliances has a long-standing partnership with JCPS, from tutoring and mentoring, to providing kitchen suites for culinary education programs,” said Peter Pepe, vice president of Clothes Care for GE Appliances. “We’ve also provided laundry appliances for multiple family resource centers across the district. Through those donations, we learned the need for laundry appliances goes well beyond teaching daily life skills, but actually affects student attendance and performance by supplying a resource for students who may not have access to laundry services at home or in their neighborhood. We’re committed to families across this city we call home. If the donation of laundry appliances helps student attendance and performance, we’re all in without question.”
“Our teachers and staff are committed to providing the best learning environment for our students,” said Koki Harris, head of student support at Fern Creek High School. “Despite our best efforts to get kids to school, we still experienced high levels of absenteeism from specific populations of students. Through our own research we discovered nearly 6% of our students were absent on any given day because they lacked clean clothing. If it’s a choice between coming to school dirty and have kids make fun of you, or staying home, they’ll stay home.”
Fern Creek High School launched the “laundry and loot” program that encourages students to bring their laundry to school for cleaning. Since the launch of the program, student engagement and attendance has increased at the school.
“GE Appliances has always been a tremendous partner, doing everything they can to help make our students and families successful,” said Dr. Marty Pollio, JCPS superintendent. “We appreciate this next step to ensure every child, in every school, has the opportunity to feel and look their best.”
As part of GE Appliances’ corporate citizenship strategy, the company is committed to investments in community equity, education, and workforce development. GE Appliances supports school districts in every community where the business has manufacturing facilities across the U.S. The company employees more than 6000 employees in Louisville, KY. This year alone, employees of GE Appliances have committed more than 1000 volunteer hours to JCPS schools.
“GE Appliances' corporate investment comes in various forms, including major capital improvements that grow our economy, its industry-leading FirstBuild partnership, and the thousands of hours that GE Appliances employees spend volunteering across our community each year,” said Louisville Mayor Greenberg. “Today’s announcement further demonstrates GE Appliances’ commitment to the children and families in our schools, demonstrating amazing corporate citizenship.”
