• GE Appliances and Amazon Alexa collaboration enables hands-free convenience with voice control
  • GE Appliances adds skills just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, which include tailored turkey oven temperatures and meat probe settings

LOUISVILLE, Ky.November 16, 2016Thanksgiving Day is a time for family, friends, food, and let’s face it, sometimes frustration that leads to frazzled cooks. How can a host or hostess possibly remain sane while still managing to not overcook the pièce de résistance of the meal? The answer lies within your GE Appliances oven and its sous chef: your voice. GE Appliances has added Amazon Alexa skill sets to their connected appliances just in time for the holiday.

Whether tied up stuffing the prized bird or in the living room catching up on the score of the game, owners now have the option to preheat the oven for the perfect turkey or check on the internal temperature while it’s cooking, all with the sound of their voice.

The Alexa skill built for GE Appliances and Monogram® products has a unique name, which is “Geneva.” Launched in September of this year, GE Appliances, a Haier company, is the first Alexa skill to control a broad range of kitchen appliances, including refrigerators, dishwashers, wall ovens, ranges, laundry and more.

For example, using the command “Alexa, tell Geneva to preheat my oven for turkey” will start Geneva's functions to help you find the preferred cooking mode for your perfect Thanksgiving turkey. Geneva will also offer helpful reminders, for example to remind you to make sure that the turkey is placed in the center of the oven.

Additionally, the connected oven meat probe is now part of the skillset. Simply saying “Alexa, ask Geneva for oven status” will result in Geneva telling you if the oven is preheating or reached the final temperature, what mode it is in and the current temperature of the meat probe inside of the Thanksgiving bird. No more need to get up from watching the game to check on the meat probe temperature for the turkey. An integrated meat probe can also reduce the risk of over or undercooking with faulty, plastic thermometers.

Geneva also gets into the holiday spirit: Talking with her on Thanksgiving will prompt her to give greetings and good tidings, so don’t be alarmed when she says “Happy Thanksgiving Day,” “Gobble Gobble” and “Happy Turkey Day” as you baste, mash and simmer around the kitchen.

A few other skills handy for the holiday include:

  • “Alexa, tell Geneva to set the oven timer for 10 minutes.”
  • “Alexa, tell Geneva to make hot water for coffee in 15 minutes.”
  • “Alexa, ask Geneva if the icemaker is full.”
  • “Alexa, ask Geneva when the dishwasher will be finished.”
