LOUISVILLE, Ky., - More people than ever now have access to Kentucky Science Center. In three months since launching in December, more than 400 families signed up for a Community Access Membership. GE Appliances, a Haier company, is joining the effort with a donation to reach even more people.
The Community Access Membership provides a free family membership to families participating in the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Women Infants Children (WIC) supplemental nutrition program.
“The response to Community Access Memberships was exactly what we were hoping for. We want everyone to be able to Do Science,” said Mike Norman, Kentucky Science Center Chief Executive Officer. “Removing barriers to access offers everyone the promise of curiosity, creativity, and innovation. Our goal is to inspire everyone to be a life-long learner, which leads to a better quality of life for all. With the support of GE Appliances, we will be able to continue to expand this program.”
“At GE Appliances, we are a company built on a foundation of equity, inclusion and innovation,” said Allison Martin, senior director of Corporate Citizenship for GE Appliances. “GE Appliances is honored to be able to invest in this Community Access Membership and help the Science Center provide an opportunity for all families to visit, experiment, and learn without financial burden. This program removes barriers and opens opportunities.”
SNAP/WIC cards from any state will be accepted for the Community Access Membership.
Application forms can be downloaded from kysciencecenter.org/membership or are available at the Science Center ticket desk and select community partners. Forms must be returned to the Science Center in person with a valid SNAP/WIC card and photo ID at the time of membership activation. The SNAP/WIC recipient must be named on the membership.
In conjunction with the Community Access Membership, Kentucky Science Center is also launching Supporting Memberships. Members will have the option to donate the cost of an additional membership when purchasing a membership for themselves. These tax-deductible donations will support the Annual Fund for Science, which helps Kentucky Science Center further its mission of doing science throughout the community.
Kentucky Science Center remains open to the public. With limited capacity, mask requirements, and more than 50,000 square feet of space, families can Do Science safely inside the building. In following with established guidelines, Kentucky Science Center requires masks for all guests 6 years of age and older. Guests should stay with their travel group to help maintain proper social distancing. Advance tickets are recommended as capacity is limited.
