LOUISVILLE, Ky.—April 29, 2019—GE Appliances (GEA), a Haier company, hosted a virtual classroom experience for students in the manufacturing pathway in the Academies of Louisville at Doss High School. The students received a video tour of Appliance Park and had a live web chat with employees. Students were able to learn about job opportunities at Appliance Park and the skills, education and training they need to compete for these jobs in the future.
“GE Appliances has been one of Louisville’s leading manufacturers for more than 65 years,” said Melanie Cook, chief operating officer of GE Appliances, a Haier company. “This is a tremendous opportunity for us to showcase the careers available at our company while helping to develop our pipeline, and recruit and train the great American manufacturers of tomorrow.”
The virtual classroom shows the company’s commitment to building stronger communities and strengthens the long-standing partnership between GEA, one of Kentucky’s largest employers, and Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS), one of the nation’s largest school districts.
In addition to the virtual tour, students were also given a real-world challenge at their school to solve. Students will present their findings to a panel of JCPS leaders, and the top students will present their projects to GEA executives.
This aligns with the JCPS Backpack of Success Skills initiative, which is an opportunity for students to experience real-world, authentic learning opportunities and use those for their student defenses that take place in fifth, eighth and 12th grades.
“I am thrilled that one of our city’s largest employers is embracing this initiative and providing the challenge to our students,” said JCPS Superintendent Dr. Marty Pollio. “Our students at Doss will be able to upload the project to their digital backpacks as evidence and use it as part of their senior defenses to show that they are college- and career-ready. This is just the type of experience I imagined for our students when we created this initiative, and I appreciate GE Appliances for their leadership in supporting our students.”
GEA is encouraging all American manufacturers to partner with their local school districts to launch similar programs in their communities.
