One of the top complaints owners have when it comes to dishwashers is clean silverware. Like any appliance, a dishwasher performs best when it’s used properly. Our Dish Expert Mike Nerdig gives his tips for loading silverware so you spoons sparkle.

  • Use the silverware basket. In a perfect world you give each utensil a home, and you distribute them evenly within the basket.
  • Stay safe. Place sharp objects such as folks and knives with handles facing up.
  • Don’t sweat the small stuff. Since it has a cover, the silverware basket is also ideal for measuring spoons, baby bottle nipples and corn cob holders.
  • Not all utensils are created equal. Tall utensils, like grill tools, must be laid flat. This prevents utensils from blocking detergent dispensers or spray arms. If your dishwasher is equipped with a third rack you have a perfect place to load your larger utensils.

When all else fails let the dishwasher lend a hand with built-in silverware jets that aim water directly at tough jobs like stuck-on oatmeal. Want more dish tips? Follow us on Twitter or set up time to talk with Mike Nerdig.
